Exciting New Anime Releases for Fall 2023
This autumn brings with it a slew of highly anticipated anime series that fans have been eagerly awaiting. Spanning from October to December, this season is packed with notable releases, including the much-anticipated remake of Ranma ½, the adaptation of the popular manga Dandadan, and the new series Dragon Ball Daima—marking the franchise’s first official release since the passing of legendary creator Akira Toriyama.
Ranma ½: A Timeless Classic Returns
Debuting on October 6, this iconic creation by Rumiko Takahashi is perhaps her most celebrated work. The original series made waves in the late 1980s and was first broadcast in Spain on Antena 3. While other Takahashi creations, such as Inu Yasha and Maison Ikkoku, enjoyed success, none captured audiences quite like Ranma ½.
For those familiar with the story, it follows the journey of Ranma Saotome and his father Genma, who venture to the mystical training grounds of Jusenkyo, infamous for its cursed ponds. An unfortunate tumble into one of these ponds transforms young Ranma into a girl, after a tragic incident involving a drowning female, while Genma emerges as a panda bear. The twists of fate deliver chaos and comedic situations, especially with the transformative properties of cold and hot water.
Ranma and Genma settle into the Tendo household, where a marriage is arranged between Ranma and one of Tendo’s daughters. Viewers will encounter a colorful cast, including the likes of Ryoga with his terrible sense of direction, the fierce Shampoo, and the comically inept Moose and Kuno—ensuring plenty of wacky adventures.
Uzumaki: A Masterpiece of Horror
Launching on September 28, Uzumaki is a work of horror genius from acclaimed author Junji Ito, originally serialized between 1998 and 1999. Set in the eerie town of Kurouzu-cho, the story revolves around Kirie Goshima, who leads a seemingly ordinary life. However, her world spirals into horror when she witnesses her father obsessing over a snail shell in a dark alley.
Kirie shares her concerns with her boyfriend, Shuuichi Saito, who mentions his father’s peculiar behavior. As they dig deeper, they realize that an obsession with spirals plagues their town, leading to a series of horrific and inexplicable events that push the inhabitants deeper into madness.
Dandadan: Paranormal Escapades
Set to premiere on October 3, Dandadan tells the story of two high school students, Momo Ayase and Okarun, who are divided in their beliefs about the paranormal. Momo is a firm believer in ghosts while Okarun champions the existence of extraterrestrials. After a friendly bet to prove their points, they find themselves facing the startling reality that both specters and aliens are indeed real.
This thrilling twist leads to Momo developing psychic abilities, allowing her to perceive and manipulate auras, augmented by supernatural powers. Meanwhile, Okarun finds himself hosting a spirit within, granting him a unique ability to shift into an ethereal form. Their journey is filled with unexpected craziness, making Dandadan a standout publication since its start in 2021.
Dragon Ball Daima: A New Chapter in a Beloved Franchise
Scheduled for release on October 11, Dragon Ball Daima is the fifth series in the beloved Dragon Ball franchise. Despite some confusion around the timeline, this new installment picks up shortly after the Majin Buu saga. The storyline revolves around a mysterious “conspiracy,” which leaves iconic characters such as Goku and Vegeta in their childhood forms.
To revert this unexpected transformation, the Z Fighters must embark on an adventure across other worlds to uncover the truth behind their predicament. Fans can look forward to another exciting chapter filled with the action and adventure that has made Dragon Ball a cultural phenomenon.
