Monsters: The True Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez has made its debut on Netflix, garnering significant attention. This exciting new series from Ryan Murphy dives into the world of true crime, recounting the chilling case of two brothers who, in the 1980s, fatally shot their parents, José and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menendez.

The Murky Waters of True Crime

Following their arrest at the end of the 80s, Lyle and Erik underwent a lengthy trial. The brothers contended that their actions stemmed from a desire for vengeance against their father for years of alleged sexual abuse. In contrast, the prosecution argued that their motives were tied to financial gain from their parents’ estate. Eventually, both brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Insights from Tammi Menendez

Tammi Menendez, Erik Menendez’s wife, now aged 53, took to Twitter to share her husband’s thoughts on the series, which he has been watching from prison.

Erik’s Perspective on the Series

“I thought we had moved past the lies and damaging portrayals of Lyle’s character. A distasteful caricature of Lyle has been created, full of grotesque and outrageous depictions that permeate the show. I can only surmise that this was done intentionally. It pains me to say that I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be so naive or inaccurate when it comes to the facts of our lives in order to create this without malicious intent,” Erik shared in his message.

He went on to express his disappointment, stating, “It saddens me to think that Netflix’s dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime has set back the painful truths several steps.” Erik is concerned that the series trivializes the traumas experienced by children who have endured abuse: “These horrific fabrications have been dismantled and illuminated by countless courageous victims over the past twenty years, who have overcome their personal shame and spoken out bravely. Yet now, Murphy is shaping his grotesque version through vile and shocking portrayals of both Lyle and me, along with heartbreaking slanders.”

A Call for Sensitivity

“It is profoundly demoralizing to know that a powerful individual can undermine decades of progress made in clarifying children’s trauma,” Erik remarked. He emphasized that violence is not a solution and is always tragic. “As such, I hope we never forget that violence against a child creates myriad horrific and silent crime scenes,” he concluded, expressing gratitude for the continued support he receives from many individuals.

It is abundantly clear that Erik Menendez is not a fan of the series, which has sparked substantial public interest.
