Netflix to Stream ‘The Boy and the Heron’ Worldwide
Recently, Netflix announced that it will begin streaming ‘The Boy and the Heron’, the latest film from Studio Ghibli and renowned director Hayao Miyazaki, on October 7 internationally, excluding the United States and Japan. The film will arrive in France later than that, slated for early 2025.
A New Collaboration Brings More Ghibli Classics to Netflix
This streaming event is part of a new licensing agreement involving Netflix, Goodfellas, and GKIDS, which will add an impressive total of 22 titles from the Studio Ghibli library to Netflix’s offerings worldwide. This collection features beloved classics such as ‘Spirited Away’, ‘Princess Mononoke’, ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’, ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’, ‘My Neighbor Totoro’, and ‘The Tale of the Princess Kaguya’, among others, ensuring that these treasured films will reach a wider audience.
Box Office Success and Award Recognition
Premiering in Japan in July 2023, ‘The Boy and the Heron’ grossed an impressive $293 million during its theatrical run. In the United States, audiences can catch the film on the Max streaming service (previously known as HBO Max) starting October 6, providing them with a full month’s head start over Netflix subscribers.
Notably, ‘The Boy and the Heron’ clinched the award for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, marking the second time a Miyazaki film has received this prestigious honor, the first being ‘Spirited Away’ in 2002. Both ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ and ‘The Wind Rises’ were nominated but did not win.
Documentary Release and Future of Miyazaki
The accolades for Miyazaki’s latest film continue, as Max has recently released a two-hour documentary focusing on the director and the making of ‘The Boy and the Heron’. This documentary is available in Japanese with English and Spanish subtitles, giving fans an exclusive look into its production.
According to Max, the documentary is described as: “A film chronicling the creation of ‘The Boy and the Heron’, shot with exclusive access to Studio Ghibli over seven astonishing years.”
It’s important to note that ‘The Boy and the Heron’ was expected to be Miyazaki’s swan song, as he had hinted at retirement plans. However, this notion quickly faded as members of the Studio Ghibli team revealed that the day after the film’s debut, Miyazaki was already pitching new story ideas for his next project. It leaves fans eagerly anticipating what creative marvel he will unveil next.
