The series focusing on the eldest daughter of ‘The Addams Family,’ featuring Jenna Ortega in the lead role, has skyrocketed to success on the streaming platform Netflix. What lies ahead for this intriguing show?
Netflix Confirms Second Season of ‘Wednesday’
In January 2023, Netflix officially announced the renewal of ‘Wednesday’ for a second season, just three months after its initial release turned out to be a monumental success. Although the confirmation came later than expected, the renewal was a foregone conclusion, primarily because the showrunners had a vested interest in continuing the series, and it was evidently beneficial for Netflix to hold onto such a winning show.
One of the showrunners, Miles Millar, expressed in an interview with TVLine, “We feel like we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters.” His creative partner, Alfred Gough, echoed this sentiment in statements to Empire, suggesting that there’s a lot more to explore in the Addams family universe.
Expected Release Date for Season 2
Currently, there is no confirmed premiere date for the second season. The Hollywood strikes in 2023 delayed the filming schedule, but by November of that year, it was announced that production would commence in Ireland in April 2024. Netflix has indicated that the new season will be released sometime in 2025.
Returning and New Faces in ‘Wednesday’
First and foremost, Jenna Ortega will reprise her iconic role as Wednesday Addams. Alongside her, we can expect Cosa (portrayed by Victor Dorobantu) to accompany her on her new adventures. The character of Xavier Thorpe, played by Percy Hynes White, is likely to return, especially now that Tyler is out of the picture, allowing Xavier to take on a more prominent role. There is also potential for the return of a former love interest, despite the shocking developments revealed in Season 1.
Adding to the intrigue, Christina Ricci is expected to return as Mrs. Thornhill, who will continue her quest for success. Although Gwendoline Christie’s character, Larissa Weems, seems less likely to return, the magical nature of this universe leaves some surprises open, particularly if there are opportunities across projects, such as her involvement with Sandman.
Furthermore, the rest of the original cast is expected to join, unless unexpected announcements arise. This includes Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Domingo de Glea as Bianca Barclay, and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, among others. New faces this season include Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton, and Steve Buscemi, promising an exciting blend of talent.
Plot Expectations for Season 2
While specific plot details remain under wraps, it seems likely that the upcoming season will explore the identity of Wednesday’s stalker. The aim is to keep viewers guessing and questioning the character’s motivations. According to Miles Millar in TVGuide, “The story could take them in numerous directions, and that depends on a second season.” Additionally, we anticipate the return of certain enemies, including Marilyn Thornhill, who may seek revenge, and Tyler, whose backstory is far from complete.
In Jenna Ortega’s own words at the Emmys, “I think everything is on a larger scale.” She mentioned that the second season will contain more action and that each episode will likely feel more cinematic, enhancing the overall viewing experience. With excitement building, both fans and newcomers are eager for what Season 2 will bring to this beloved Addams family tale.
